Frequently Asked Questions About Air Quality Testing

We get a lot of questions about indoor air quality, air quality testing, as well as specific allergens & contaminates such as mold, asbestos, COVID-19 and much more. Here you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions.

We have researched and personally tested a variety of air quality testing equipment, and only use the same gear for your home or business that we would use to test the quality of the air in Ottawa homes that our own families are breathing!

Our teams are professionally trained and experienced, using the latest in equipment and technology for accurate air quality testing. We also have the experience and knowhow to assess the conditions of a home or business so that we can conduct the most accurate, thorough and effective air quality testing possible. We look for air quality testing equipment that has been well reviewed, tested itself by independent laboratories, and capable of detecting dangers to indoor air quality such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds), asbestos, radon, mold & other particulates as well as many other substances.

New homes, unfortunately, are still subject to all sorts of contaminates in the air. The nature of the home construction process – and materials – means that a wide range of particulates and substances can be left behind when they hand the keys over to you. Rather than worry about indoor air quality and what you and your family may be breathing, why not get peace of mind with air quality testing in Ottawa & Eastern Ontario?!

In terms of cleaning, while being an efficient cleaner in one’s own environment is definitely a good thing, there are still certain substances that can escape even the best of cleaning. In our experience, many clients have been quite surprised with what they saw when we’ve conducted air quality testing in Ottawa homes & businesses.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has cited this number on many occasions. They have also found that the concentration of indoor pollutants is 2X ~ 5X higher when compared to outdoors. We’re using our HVAC systems more and more – heating and air conditioning in homes, offices, businesses and elsewhere – meaning the air we breathe is circulated and concentrated… but, with what???

That’s where air quality testing comes in. We are able to assess the indoor air quality of your home or business, so that you can have peace of mind for your family or team.

VOC’s or “Volatile Organic Compounds” are gases that are emitted into the air from solids and/or liquids that may be in your home or place of business. VOC’s can produce a range of deleterious health effects (see the next FAQ on “symptoms”). Unfortunately, the sources that can produce VOC’s are often found in homes or businesses. These include:

  • Cleaning products & disinfectants
  • Air fresheners
  • Paint
  • Building materials
  • Furniture materials
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Dry-cleaned clothing
  • Pesticide
  • Automotive products (and fuel, oil, etc.)
  • Office equipment (toner, ink, etc.)

Any of these can produce gases that linger in the air and expose those in proximity to subpar indoor air quality.

Are VOC’s lurking in your home or business? Find out with air quality testing.

Some symptoms of indoor air pollution or inferior indoor air quality include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Sinus issues
  • Congestion
  • Coughing / Sneezing
  • Irritations of skin / eyes / nose & throat
  • Exacerbation of asthma, allergies, etc.
  • Fatigue
  • Memory loss

Having just one of these symptoms certainly could be a sign of something else, with two ore symptoms the chances start to go up sharply that it could be related to indoor air quality. If you or someone in your family or place of business is experiencing some of these symptoms on a regular basis, air quality testing is an important step in either:

  • Identifying what could be causing the symptoms, or
  • Eliminating indoor air quality as a factor

In either case, air quality testing brings peace of mind.
